History of DCI

Dakwakada Capital Investments’ history goes back to the establishment of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations as a self-governing nation in 1993, when the First Nations, Government of Yukon and the Government of Canada signed the Final Agreement and Self-Government Agreement.

In 1999, the Champaign and Aishihik First Nations Trust was established to oversee the compensation and investment funds resulting from that agreement. The Trust continues to be governed by a board of trustees – all CAFN citizens.

The Dakwakada Development Corporation, a precursor of today’s DCI, was tasked by the Trust with managing business operations in the community – in particular a local sawmill it ran through 2002. In 2003 the CAFN and Trust moved to extend the development corporation’s scope, signing a memorandum of understanding allowing it to undertake private equity investment. The name of Dakwakada Development Corporation was changed to Dakwakada Capital Investments, reflecting this new focus as a private equity firm pursuing investment opportunities within and beyond the Yukon, and with the mandate of generating long-term financial returns for the Trust.

In the decades since, DCI has invested in property and real estate in Yukon, national investment funds, and a number of businesses in Yukon, British Columbia, and Alberta. It currently owns & operates businesses in construction, residential and commercial building products such as garage doors and skylights, and manufacturing.
